The Eden Valley
Beyond the Howgill Fells is the Eden Valley, which lies between the northern dales to the east, and the high fells of the Lake District to the west.
Some towns and villages lying in the Eden Valley include Appleby in Westmorland, Brough and Kirkby Stephen.
The Settle to Carlisle Railway (one of Britain's most spectacular and scenic railway lines) passes along the valley en route northwards to Carlisle - beyond where the River Eden finally meets the sea in the expansive estuary of the Solway Firth.
