Nidd Sinks
At Nidd Sinks near Lofthouse in Nidderdale the River Nidd mysteriously vanishes underground, flowing through the permeable limestone stream bed in to the Manchester Hole / Goyden Pot cave systems, to re-emerge at the Nidd Heads risings further down the valley.
In times of relative spate the intervening (and otherwise dry) river bed does actually flow with water, with the river pouring in to the open entrances of Manchester Hole and Goyden Pot in a series of spectacular cascades.
