Calendar Girls - the naked ladies of the Rylstone Women's Institute

In the late 1990s eleven women from Rylstone and Cracoe near Skipton in the Yorkshire Dales became internationally famous for having stripped off to produce a nude version of the local Women's Institute charity calendar.

The calendar went on to raise large amounts of money for Leukemia Research, and the story was subsequently made into a film called "Calendar Girls", which was previewed at the Cannes Film Festival in 2003. This movie, which stars Helen Mirren and Julie Walters, was shot on location in Skipton and Kettlewell (the latter village doubling for the original setting of Rylstone in the film).

In 2015 it was announced that the "Take That" singer Gary Barlow and Tim Firth would be writing a stage musical based on the story of the Calendar Girls This version - which is called simply "The Girls" - premiered at the Grand Theatre in Leeds in December of that same year to immediate acclaim. It is expecteded that the musical telling of the story (along with the previous movie, books and related merchandise) should help the group raise money for Leukemia Research for years to come !
