Drystone Walls in the Yorkshire Dales
First time visitors to the Yorkshire Dales are often most impressed by the gleaming white limestone walls which criss cross the hillsides marking clear boundaries for the fields, keeping in sheep and cattle, and flanking green lanes and roads running in the valleys and over the fells.
Building such walls without mortar or any kind of pointing is obviously a skilled process, and competitions are held at agricultural events such as the Malham Show and Kilnsey Show with prizes going to the best (and fastest !) builders on the day..
