At the very heart of the market town of Kirkby Stephen is the relatively large parish church which is often referred to as the "Cathedral of the Dales"*. The main part of the current building dates from 1847, though there was an Anglo-Saxon church on the site which was replaced by a Norman church in 1170 later rebuilt sometime around 1230.

The church contains the Loki Stone, a carved monolith which is believed to depict the Norse god Loki.
