Arkengarthdale

Arkengarthdale Arkengarthdale

One of the most remote northern dales, Arkengarthdale is a tributary valley of Swaledale which was once the centre of a thriving lead mining industry.

The miners have long since gone and much of Arkengarthdale is now all but deserted, with just a couple of remote hamlets and villages remaining. One of them, Langthwaite, is famous as being seen in the opening title shots of the popular BBC TV series "All Creatures Great and Small", based around the books of the famous Yorkshire vet James Herriot.

Other settlements in the dale include Whaw, Arkle Town (which is actually just a hamlet) and the intrigingly named Booze.
