Arkengarthdale
One of the most remote northern dales, Arkengarthdale is a tributary valley of Swaledale - and once the centre of a thriving lead mining industry.
Today Arkengarthdale is all but deserted, with a couple of remote hamlets and villages remaining. One of them, Langthwaite, is famous as being seen in the opening title shots of the popular BBC TV series "All Creatures Great and Small", based around the books of the famous Yorkshire vet James Herriot.
