Chapel-le-Dale

Stream emerging from beneath limestone rocks Farm track passing over limestone rocks

Just downstream of Chapel le Dale the River Greta* disappears under the limestone bedrock only to remerge again yards down the valley, forming a natural crossing.

Called "God's Bridge" this natural feature has also been made use of by man, with a farm track passing over to get animals and people over the water.

There is also a similar "God's Bridge" near Bowes in the Stainmore Gap which coincidentally also passes over a different "River Greta"!

[N.B. * = There is actually some confusion as to the name of this particular River Greta (as it is sometimes called the River Doe) and so it might be better referred to as "Chapel Beck" - see the Ingleton waterfalls walk for more information.]
