Gunnerside
Gunnerside is a small village lying between Muker and Reeth in Swaledale, located where Gunnerside Gill (a tributary valley well known for its historical lead mining activities) meets the main dale.
Interestingly the village lent its name to "Operation Gunnerside" - a Second World War operation to thwart Nazi attempts to build an atomic bomb by sabotaging their main heavy water production plant at a hydro-electric power station in Norway. The operation - which was portrayed in the film "The Heroes of Telemark" - was codenamed "Gunnerside" by the head of the Special Operations Executive team Sir Charles Jocelyn Hambro who used to shoot grouse in the area.
